Christmas Pajama Party

One of the things I will miss most about this age is attending so many fun playdates with our other toddler and preschool friends. “Parties” at this age are so low key and always a blast– the kids are content with just hanging out together and playing! I love the simplicity of this stage of life and will miss it when the girls get older and wouldn’t dream of going to “parties” anymore with me!

Crystal is the party queen of our neighborhood and Samantha and Amelia were excited to be invited to her cute Christmas Pajama Party. Even some of the adults came in Christmas pjs, but since I’m pretty sure no one wanted to see a pregnant mom in her pajamas, I opted out. Thanks, Crystal for hosting!

I never realize how tall Samantha and Amelia are until they are standing next to other kids. Besides London and Quincy, Samantha and Amelia are the youngest of the group by 6 months to several years. They are huge little elves!

IMG_3569

Crystal recently got a trampoline and now every single kid in the neighborhood is bound to be over at her house 24/7.

IMG_7126

My plan for when the new baby comes is just to send Samantha and Amelia over here.

IMG_7120

Crystal really needs to start charging admission.

IMG_7139

Amelia elf.

IMG_7132

Way too much fun.

IMG_7124

Ring around the rosie is ten times better on the tramp, obviously.

IMG_7135 (2)

I guess there’s a reason my mom never let us have a trampoline growing up! Samantha christened the new tramp with its first child injury. The tramp has a zipper to close it, but someone forgot and Samantha came tumbling out. She was upset for a bit and decided to take a break with her Olaf and a donut before jumping back in like nothing happened.

Addison and Samantha chill out.

IMG_7138 (2)

Amelia was very concerned for her sister and kept offering to go get her a donut and hot chocolate.

IMG_7136

The kids played a cute Pin the Heart on the Grinch game.

IMG_3556

IMG_3558

The girls’ favorite activity was the gift exchange. Everyone brought a dollar store gift and the kids drew names out of hats to determine who was next to pick. Samantha was up first and then somehow managed to draw Amelia’s name out of the hat. Way to look out for sis!

IMG_3550Samantha was excited about her ball and Amelia immediately headed to the craft table to put together the reindeer craft she received. That’s what I love about this age– they are so happy with something so simple!

IMG_3551

IMG_3559

Lots to do outside at the craft table. Anything involving glue and the girls are in. They are obsessed!

IMG_3544

IMG_3549

For the grand finale, we brought over our snow machine we had at our Christmas party last year and let the kids run wild in the flurry. Sad that this is all the snow we get around here!

IMG_3573

What is this stuff?

IMG_7143 (2)

IMG_7144 (2)

The kids loved taking turns controlling the snow machine.

IMG_7146

IMG_7141 (2)

Kennedy, the master snow maker.

IMG_3581

When the “snow” hit the ground, it turned into the consistency of foam bubbles, which Amelia loved to smear all over herself.

IMG_7148 (1)

The two Cindy Lou Whos had a wonderful morning thanks to Crystal and friends.

IMG_3578

After the pajama party, we regrettably had a little last minute Christmas shopping to do and just kept the girls in their elf pajamas while we were out. I was reminded why I do most of our shopping online when our trip took about two hours longer than necessary due to people stopping us to make comments every five seconds! Approaches by two different agents is definitely a record– good thing Jake is very upfront about telling them we are not interested in subjecting the girls to commercial pictures/filming. They get enough from my own picture taking and filming as it is!

A bonus for all the attention is Samantha and Amelia received several candy canes and prizes from gushing store clerks. I wonder sometimes if all the attention will go to the heads and how the new baby is going to handle everything…

Testing out some rocking chairs. The girls had some clear preferences.

IMG_0455

Samantha and Amelia demonstrated some impressive sharing/taking turns skills while we were at the store. When left to their own devices, they always surprise me with the way they work things out with each other!

As a side note, it’s funny how people feel like they can make all sorts of comments and ask tons of questions just because you are pregnant (another reason our shopping took forever)! Some of my faves from this excursion and some I hear all the time when I am normally out and about:

Twins again?

You look like you are ready to pop tomorrow!

Are you sure you are going to make it until February?

If they made a pregnant Barbie doll, you would be it!

Ummmm…. thank you?

I know people aren’t trying to be mean-spirited or anything and just think it’s funny when they see the girls and me around, but it would sometimes be nice to make it through a store without talking to a million strangers for once.

These random ladies stopped us and asked if we would like our picture taken. Ok, whatever.

IMG_0463

I never would have thought Christmas pajamas would cause so much excitement that day!

Christmas Nativities and Santa’s Village

It seems that all the late nights we’ve spent out at Christmas activities in the freezing weather (i.e. 50 degrees) have about done us in, I think, and the girls and I have been chilling together on the couch this week with stuffy noses. Jake has been the sole survivor!

A few Christmas activities we did last week:

We met up with the Wrights to see a live nativity in Ladera. Animals and hot chocolate… need I say more?

IMG_3494

IMG_3497

IMG_0358

The true Christmas miracle was that none of our four toddlers burned themselves or lit anything on fire during Silent Night.

IMG_0364

Behold the power of fire.

IMG_0362

A photographer there asked to take a bunch of pictures of the girls. This one ended up in the local section of the OC Register! Not sure why they chose to only include Amelia instead of both of the girls, but Amelia was sure excited!

IMG_3583

Our December nightly outings continued with going to the Santa’s Village at the community center. Samantha and Amelia’s two all-time favorite Christmas songs are Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph, and lo and behold, who was there to greet them?

IMG_0441

Starstruck!

IMG_0443

Speaking of celebrities, it was a special treat to see Parker there, who has been working overtime being the best new big brother ever to Baby Maple! Samantha and Amelia had an in depth chat with him to find out how the baby thing was going and what they should expect in a few months.

Gorging on candy canes at last year’s Santa’s Village, 2014: IMG_9333

Since we had already met Santa this year at the twins club event where we didn’t have to wait in line, we opted to just wave to Santa as we walked around instead of waiting.

IMG_0414

Last year’s Santa photo will suffice.

The girls were content just looking at all the fun decorations.

Cookie decorating never hurts either.

While keeping vigilant for Frosty and Rudolph sightings, we watched some of the classic old Chipmunk Christmas movie while sipping hot chocolate.

IMG_0435

Over the weekend, we met up with Amy, Keriann, Crystal and Sheela’s families to see the Follow the Star nativity show and creche exhibit put on by one of the local stakes. We barely made it through the show (fortunately only 20 minutes) before the girls started melting down, presumably from the unusually chilly evening and the fact that they ran out of hot chocolate.

Fun fact: all three of Crystal’s girls have played the baby Jesus in this show in years past!

IMG_3590

It was a lifesaver having Lily there to keep the girls entertained during the show.

IMG_3589

The girls bundled up. Chelsea, London, Kennedy, Jadyn, Addison, Samantha and Camdyn.

IMG_3585

During the day, the girls have kept busy singing Christmas carols at music class, doing somersaults choreographed to Christmas music at MyGym and making Christmas crafts at art class. My favorite so far has been the Naughty/Nice monitor we made in class. It has a little arrow we can move to either the Naughty or the Nice side of a paper plate– theoretically great for instant feedback. The only problem is, the girls think it’s hilarious anytime they do something that warrants the arrow turning to the Naughty Side and have started trying to get their arrow there on purpose.

It’s a good thing we’ve had a lot of fun activities going on to bring in a little Christmas cheer after everything seemed to hit the fan all in one week! Bandit tore his ACL and has had to be on modified “doggie bedrest” which he has not been too excited about. I can’t feel too bad for him since the girls have been such good caretakers and he’s been completely pampered.

On top of dealing with the joys of dog ownership, we of course had to have a slab leak two weeks before Christmas in which five gaping holes had to be torn out of our downstairs walls by the plumbers trying to find the leak.. the same walls we just painted and had new baseboards put in three weeks ago (obviously HAD to be these ones). No major damage to the house (unfortunately…would have loved to have an excuse to replace our floor downstairs), although my heart goes out to our neighbors who had a slab leak at the same time and whose kitchen was basically totaled in the process. It all gets crazy at Christmastime!

Good thing the girls don’t seem to mind all the chaos. We showed them our mistletoe and they are really great about remembering to give lots of hugs and kisses!

Spreading the Christmas cheer!

Holiday Sweetness

This Christmas, we haven’t been baking as much as usual due to general tiredness and lack of motivation to clean up after the total kitchen destruction that is certain to take place anytime Samantha and Amelia get a hold of flour and frosting. However, we did manage to do some gingerbread house decorating and some cookies, which I’m calling good for the year.

IMG_3469

The girls love to be in the kitchen and can often be found with pots, pans, whisks and spatulas, cooking up their own creations while I’m making lunch or dinner. They also love to help make smoothies, pancakes and prepare their own snacks, particularly if it involves anything to do with cutting or spreading with knives– eek!

IMG_3473

Just look at that concentration.

IMG_3483

IMG_3475

I’m not sure how much candy actually made it onto the house as it kept mysteriously disappearing.

IMG_3486

A gingerbread masterpiece, complete in all its high fructose corn syrup glory. The girls were happy with just a piece of the gingerbread and then were content to look at it on top of the fridge for a week before I finally threw it out. Jake could always judge my stress level that day when he got home by how many little pieces I had broken off and nibbled on!

IMG_3482

In addition to baking, the girls helped put up our lights, tree and other decorations this year.

IMG_0476

Somehow we only have about 1/3 of the ornaments on our tree right now as we did two weeks ago. The temptation to pull them off is still very strong for a 2.5 year old, apparently.

IMG_0481

This year, Jake took the girls to pick out our tree again, but this time, there were no meltdowns!

More baking! Jodi brought over her famous sugar cookies for Samantha, Amelia, Maliyah and Allie to decorate.

IMG_3520

Maliyah and Allie have some serious decorating skills and kept their decorating stations miraculously nice and neat. The girls’ areas, in comparison, looked like a nuclear sprinkle bomb went off. I gave up trying to teach them that the entire sprinkle can did not need to end up on one cookie.

Speaking of holiday sweetness, Baby Maple made her grand debut at the beginning of December and when Phi texted Amy and me to come meet her one day during nap time, we ran over as fast as possible! There’s nothing like holding a precious newborn to make your heart melt! Especially when I’m not sleep deprived with my own precious newborn!

2nd Annual Breakfast with Santa at South Coast Plaza

Leading up to the South Coast Breakfast with Santa with the SMOMC (local twins club), Samantha and Amelia were excited to meet Santa for the first time this season and rehearsed what they were going to tell him constantly. Even though they always act excited at home, they tend to get a little stage fright when the big moment arrives.

The most stoic Christmas photo faces ever! Samantha wouldn’t go near Santa, while Amelia tolerated sitting on him for a few seconds. Samantha: SHOOT ME NOW.

IMG_7039

Amelia has made vast improvements in her attitude toward Santa since last year, when she sat as far away as possible from Santa on Daddy’s lap and screamed her lungs out.

Our Breakfast with Santa photo 2014:

IMG_5671

I never understand why Santa gives the kids the candy cane after the photo instead of before– as a sign of good will. The girls were suddenly very friendly with Santa after they received their treat and shyly whispered what they wanted for Christmas. Amelia said she wanted “cookies” and Samantha told Santa she wanted “pie.” I guess Christmas will be easy this year!

Tummies filled with candy canes, pastries, orange juice, eggs and bacon, the girls were ready to play. We only had to ride the carousel 74 times this year, with me joining for exactly one ride before pleading nausea and having Jake step in. While they whirled around on the carousel, I helped some of my twin mom friends with their kids in line to meet Santa. My friend, Lara’s, twins had the absolute best photo, with both 2 year old Michael and Ellie screaming until their faces were bright red and squirming off Santa.

As always, the best part about any of the twin events was talking to the other moms (especially the one with younger twins) and remembering back to that first year. There were some 3 month old boy twins dressed as elves that were just way too adorable. Seeing them snuggled in their double snap ‘n’ go brought back so many memories!

IMG_7075

All the reindeer pretty much looked the same, but Samantha always insisted on picking out a different one each time.

The girls didn’t care for any window shopping this year, unlike last:

IMG_7402

Samantha and Amelia asked if they could climb into the sleigh together all by themselves and ride without us. Done.

IMG_0344

It melts my heart watching them giggle and hold hands/talk to each other the whole time. It’s those moments that all the hard work of taking care of twins totally pays off. They are definitely best friends!

Merry Twinmas!
