October at the Bucket Park

October here is one of my least favorite months, mainly because instead of the weather turning cooler and letting us finally don boots and sip hot apple cider, it always gets hotter! We don’t really have a fall here until January, so we usually spend the hot, dry Octobers at the pool and beach. Not complaining about year-round access to the beach, but it is nice to have actual seasons like the rest of the country once in a while. I guess that’s what visiting Utah is for!

This October, Aunt Sarah and Grammy and Grandpa came to visit and helped us schlep out gear and kids from pool, to the beach, to the water park and all around town. We love that we can walk to the Bucket Park, which is just down the hill from our new house and because it’s a part of our HOA dues, there’s no fee. We spent basically all summer and fall here! Thanks, Aunt Sarah, for the awesome candid photos!

Waiting under the bucket for it to pour water on their heads is always exciting!

Meredith worked on her back float this summer/fall.

Little fish Amelia.

Every hour, they do “safety breaks” which basically means the teenage lifeguards have ten minutes to text and eat snacks before opening back up the water park. During that time, we usually grab Meredith and run over to the splash pad next to the big bucket so that she won’t be tempted to go in the water during the mandatory break.

Amelia loves to sit and put both her knees inside her shirts, stretching them out! It drives me crazy! Her swimsuit never recovered this summer.

Daddy daughter date.

Happy October!

October Ice Cream and Pizza Birthdays

In October, Aunt Sarah, Grammy and Grandpa traveled from Utah to hang out with us and celebrate Cousin Hailey’s 1st Birthday! We couldn’t believe it had already been a year, and Meredith was excited to officially have another toddler cousin. Amelia and Samantha unfortunately got sick, so Grammy stayed home with them, while the rest of us drove up for the party. It was the cutest ice cream party I’ve ever seen! Thanks for the photos, Aunt Sarah!

Hailey was not too enthused about her cousin constantly playing with her hair and poking and prodding her like a doll!

Please get her away!

Me want cake.

Lori hanging with the gang.

Meredith and Noah were pals for the day.

Don’t know if Grandpa was successful and getting the perfect smile out of Hailey or not.

So many treats to choose from…

Meredith and Noah.

Hailey was still not sure about her cousin by the end of the party!

Not cool guys.

Meredith had a blast on the way back– road trip with Aunt Sarah!

Chilling in the pool back at home later that weekend.

In October, the twins went to a pizza party for their school friend, Ella. Who knew California Pizza Kitchen opened early for private pizza making birthday parties? It was the perfect low-key/super fun party!

First, all the kids went behind the scenes and got a tour of the back of the restaurant. Seeing the soda dispensers and the huge walk-in freezer was a hit.

Pizza making time! Everyone got their own personalized pizza and chose their toppings, then the staff fired them up in the ovens while the kids did crafts.

After eating their pizza (it was only 10 a.m. at this point, but the kids didn’t seem to care!), it was banana split time. Definitely keeping this birthday party idea in mind– the restaurant staff did all the work, leaving the rest of us parents to relax!

Tracy Aviary with Aunt Sarah

Last year, one of the items on our Utah bucket list was visiting the Tracy Aviary near Aunt Sarah’s house in Salt Lake, but the day we went, we didn’t make it in time for closing. We were so happy we were able to make it this year, and that Aunt Sarah could come with us! It ended up being one of our favorite excursions of the trip. I drove by Jake’s old house across from Liberty Park and showed the girls where he lived while we were dating before we entered the park and met Sarah at the Aviary, which the girls had all sorts of questions about.

I never would have guessed there was such a beautiful nature preserve/ bird sanctuary right in the middle of SLC. With the exception of the very tiny condor habitat (so sad!) everything was well done and it was well worth spending a morning there. The twins loved climbing on fallen logs and rocks, while Meredith pointed and shrieked in delight at every bird we saw. Aunt Sarah attended a bird show with the twins while I hung out with Meredith outside and the girls got to see some large and exotic birds up close when they brought them through the audience and gave a flying demonstration.

We were the only ones inside the rainforest habitat that morning and the volunteer there was a little too excited (starved for human contact?) to point out all the exotic birds to us. They also had bird identification sheets that the twins loved using to go on a scavenger hunt for birds.

We passed by a bunch of groups of kids there for summer camps, so maybe next year!

The girls’ favorite part was feeding the Amazonian Sun Conures. The birds must not have been very hungry that day, because the volunteer really struggled to get them to come to us to eat.

After everyone had had a turn with the birds, poor Samantha still hadn’t any luck!

We were all silently praying the dumb bird would just land on her freaking arm for a second so we could avoid tears and move on.

Finally, the bird complied. Phew! We could see those tears coming any second…

Obstinate birds!

While the abundance of trees and foliage provided a ton of shade, that didn’t keep us from melting by noon, and everyone was in a sun-induced coma by the time we left.

Thanks for coming with us to the Aviary, Aunt Sarah!

Lazy Summer Days in Utah

After Jake flew home for the next week, the girls and I explored all the splash pads in Utah County (why weren’t those there when I was a kid?), visited with friends and family and mostly just hung out in the backyard. By Day Two, “Where is Daddy????” was the constant refrain/wail from the girls and compounded by the intense August heat, by Day Five, they were in complete meltdown mode. Still, we enjoyed our lack of a strict schedule and waking up every morning with no plans, but to see where the day took us. It was a “slow summer” (or as close as we usually get) at its finest.

Intuitively feeling a meltdown moment coming on, Grammy saved the day by pulling out a craft kit that lasted through those lazy, hot afternoons all week!

Good morning (hopefully)!

A little spider in her web.

Every day when Grammy got home from work, she’d find us lounging around in the backyard, with the kids begging me to push them on the swings, and me in an adirondack chair, pretending I couldn’t hear them. She took over kid duty for me, while I made dinner in peace (a welcome trade-off).

It was scorching hot by 10 a.m., so we tried to hit the trail early in the morning with a bike or scooter ride.

We visited the Highland, Springville, Orem, and Bluffdale splash pads, with Bluffdale and Springville being our faves.

Not only did Wardle Fields in Bluffdale have an enormous splash pad, waterfall, and a creek running through it, the girls were thrilled with the massive zipline and huge playground.

All the heat and humidity culminated in rain and thunderstorms one morning, so after a few hours of bounce house jumping at Kangaroo Zoo, we stopped at the iconic Taco Amigo on the way home… this one’s for you, Kati!

Uncle Mike provided comic relief during meltdown moments and accompanied the girls on a bike ride in the 90 degree evening heat!

Our other Uncle Mike was also there to be silly with the girls and trade off swing duty.

Meredith loved the revolving door of family coming in and out!

It didn’t get dark early enough for the girls to actually roast marshmallows at night, but they did roast them in the heat of the evening, and didn’t seem to mind.

Lounging with Aunt Sarah.

We met up with two of my high school friends at the splash pad in Springville and had quite the crew between us all. Meredith played with everyone, while the twins ran off and made some other completely random friend.

We also hung out with my friend, Katie, from teaching school, who moved to Utah last year. Her twins, Lizzy and Iris, were good sports playing duck duck goose with my twins (my girls’ rules of the game are iffy).

During our vacation, I was trying to transition Meredith to a one-nap day once and for all, and, as a consequence, she was a nightmare from 9 am-1 pm every day! When we visited Thanksgiving Point and rode the ponies, kind strangers offered to hold a screaming/kicking/banshee wailing Meredith while I helped the girls onto their horses and took pictures. Meredith alternated between shrieking in delight when we walked around to see the rest of the chickens, goats, horses, cows, llamas and other animals, and shrieking in anger whenever I pulled her back from climbing into the animal pens!

Jake arrived back in Utah a week later to three little girls clambering for his attention non-stop. I pretty much clocked out for the next week, being exhausted from the week before! Meredith and I took a long nap the day he came back, while he took the twins to the Gateway Discovery Children’s Museum in SLC with Grandma Celeste.

Checking out the train station.

It was an exhausting week for everyone!
