Post-Thanksgiving Beach Day and Thanksgiving II

After a scrumptious Thanksgiving meal and fun morning with the Erpeldings, we headed home and everyone dozed off in a post-turkey coma. The best part about having Thanksgiving early in the day was being able to relax and not have to keep the kids entertained while preparing a huge dinner. Since it was a nice 80 degree day, we went to Aliso Creek beach that evening, where it was uncrowded, save for a few families roasting turkey legs and picnicking with their Thanksgiving fare around the fire rings. We may have to keep that in mind for next year! Stuffed, we just brought snacks, and lounged around until it was too chilly to sit on the cold sand once the sun went down. Early dinner + beach = awesome Thanksgiving tradition I’d like to replicate.

Mesmerized by seagulls.

Thanks for that visual, Sammy.

img_3203 img_3208

Note Amelia’s painted nails. The twins have been really into begging me to paint their nails recently. It’s miraculous how long they can sit still while their nails are drying. All it takes is the right motivation!

Stuffed turkey.

img_3213

Like a baby turtle, crawling to the sea…

We felt bad that Bandit didn’t get to partake in any turkey, so we brought him along to enjoy the salty air.

img_3220

They girls and Jake built a pretty sturdy castle that withstood the waves crashing down on it several times. We kept having to move all our stuff up because of the high tide, and more than once, I had to grab Meredith and run for it before we got soaked.

img_3223

Meredith could spend hours feeling the sand in awe and letting it slip between her little fingers. Unlike the twins at her age, she usually doesn’t try to eat it. We think she’ll be our smart one.

img_3215img_3225

That night, after putting the kids to bed, it was time to bust out a second Thanksgiving meal for Great Grandpa, whom we had invited over for Thanksgiving II the next day. Jake and I tag teamed making sweet potato casserole, mashed potatoes and roasting a turkey that night while watching a movie. I enjoy cooking, so throwing together Thanksgiving II in the wee hours of the night was a fun challenge, and Jake tolerated it due to being able to watch a movie at the same time.

We had leftover cranberries and stuffing from our first Thanksgiving meal, and only needed to reheat everything, plus throw together some green beans, carrot gratin, and Brussels sprouts before Grandpa arrived. Pre-cooking everything the night before and reheating it worked out great, except for the turkey, which was about ten minutes away from becoming the parched Griswold Family turkey debacle.  Slathered in gravy, the turkey wasn’t inedibly dry, but we will definitely have to practice to get it perfect in case we end up doing it again!

The kids didn’t mind.img_1659

Everything was Meredith approved.

img_1656

Best buds. img_1669

There’s something about Great Grandpa that brings out the silliness in the twins. They get so excited whenever he comes over!

img_1677

The rest of Thanksgiving weekend, Jake had to catch up on work that had piled up, so the girls and I hung out, put up our Christmas decorations, and feasted on leftovers. Meredith had a minor panic attack when the girls pranked her by telling her there were no more sweet potatoes:

img_1692

Phew. You guys were just kidding.

img_1693

We checked out a new park we hadn’t been to before and Meredith had the time of her life hanging out with the big kids.

img_3233 img_3234

img_1681

Meredith is obsessed with play structures and climbed in and out of this tube for a solid thirty minutes. She is crazy adventurous whenever we go to the park and will crawl up and down the structures like it’s a piece of cake. We always have to be vigilant following close behind her because she truly has no fear.

img_1687

Four minutes of Meredith crawling in slow mo because I was too lazy to clip it shorter:

I wish Meredith would move in slow mo in real life… it’s exhausting keeping up with her!

Lots of love,

Thanksgiving 2015

Having just arrived back from Utah, we decided not to travel again for actual Thanksgiving, even though we were sad to miss all the family that got together at Aunt Linda and Uncle David’s for the holiday. Samantha and Amelia had a blast last year at their park and playing with all the various yard creatures at their place. We hope to visit soon!

Thanksgiving at Aunt Linda and Uncle David’s in Yucca, 2014:

Uncle David and Amelia– such a little baby last year!

IMG_9217

We missed our cousins this year!

IMG_9159

Our friends, Sheela and Todd, graciously (and bravely!) invited us over for the Thanksgiving meal, which was perfect since we didn’t have to travel more than a couple miles. Samantha and Amelia “helped” with the pumpkin pies we brought over… and by “helped,” I mean created the most disastrous mess in the kitchen/their own bodies. We ended up keeping one of the pies they “made” at home for them to enjoy since most of the filling ended up in their hair.

Samantha and Amelia were completely occupied from the moment we arrived playing with Lily, Avery, Owen and Gavin’s toys. They didn’t even want to stop to eat dinner they were having so much fun with the kids.

IMG_3399

Lily and Avery were pro babysitters and knew just the way to the girls’ hearts– princess costumes.

IMG_3409

We served up the kids their Thanksgiving fixings first. What a fun group at the kids’ table!

IMG_3404

IMG_3405

Then, since the food smelled SO good, we all decided to sit down together and eat. Baby Girl was definitely having a field day with all the delicious fixings on the menu. The “grown up Dora movie” was a huge hit with S and A who were totally engrossed while the adults finished our dinner.

How did Avery know that Amelia loves to be tucked in? She was one happy camper!

IMG_3407

After dinner, the kids entertained us with a musical skit written by Lily in which the kids said what they were grateful for and performed a song and dance to match, plus an acrobatics show choreographed by Lily. Some serious talent over here!

IMG_3410

Then, the kids showed us their favorite Turkey Dance Song, which is sure to become a tradition at our house now. All the adults and kids had a dance party, while S and A weren’t too sure what was going on!

The Turkey Dance Song for future reference next year!

We didn’t see the girls for a good 45 minutes because they were so busy upstairs playing in Lily and Avery’s room. Lily and Avery were so sweet about sharing all their dolls and toys. While the girls chatted, the boys hung out on the couch. Gavin was especially attached to Jake. What a cutie!

The moment everyone had been waiting for– dessert! Toddler and adult approved.

IMG_3422

It was the perfect Friendsgiving! We were so grateful for Sheela, Todd, Sheela’s mom, their sweet family friend, and the kids for a great evening. I haven’t had that relaxing of a dinner in a while and it was adorable seeing all the kids interact.

The next day, we had Great Papa over for dinner and pie, story reading and puzzle putting together.

IMG_0253

Samantha is quite the puzzle maker these days.

IMG_3441

The girls begged to be carried around in a “pouch,” which is what they call my baby bump.

IMG_3436

Two babies in the “pouch” flashbacks! So glad we won’t have to do that this time around.

IMG_0170

Pie for the second night in a row!

Sugar coma.

IMG_3449

Kisses and hugs for Great Papa!

IMG_3455

We are usually traveling over Thanksgiving and never get our decorations up until the first week of December, but since we stayed home this year, we put everything up (except the tree) Friday and Saturday. Samantha came shopping with me to grab a few extra rolls of wrapping paper/baking items and thought it was hilarious to be covered up with all the supplies.

IMG_3458

Sunday was relatively relaxing with just church on the agenda. Amelia loves to occupy herself putting stickers on my bump.

Faux Thanksgiving in Utah

Our trip to Utah was short and sweet, but we packed a punch.

We played in the leaves in ten minute increments before we got too cold and had to go inside because we are wimps! Then, it was back out again! Rinse and repeat.

The girls’ favorite game was “Bury Mommy!”

IMG_3315

Amelia informed me that I was an ice cream cone and she was putting on all the “toppings.”

IMG_3312

Nothing beats a hot apple cider picnic!

IMG_3317

We braved the wind chill and visited and fed the horses a few times.

IMG_0215

IMG_0212

The girls practiced their driving skills in the little cars Grammy picked up for them. We broke up more than one fight over who could drive the coveted red car (even though I still maintain the convertible with a trunk is MUCH cooler).

IMG_3373 IMG_3374 15Thanksgiving1286

One of the best parts about Grammy’s house is digging out all the toys from childhood yore. Bring on the Polly Pockets!

Vintage Lite Brite? YES PLEASE.

Bring on the childhood memories.

IMG_3360

Grammy and Aunt Sarah had a girls’ night with Samantha and Amelia while Jake and I went to Kati’s wedding reception. Love this picture Sarah took of the girls right as we were leaving. Amelia was all smiles while Samantha was moody (i.e. screaming). As we walked out the door, we could hear Grammy serenading the girls with a song, while Samantha screamed, relentlessly, “NO! I DON’T WANT THE SONG!”

15Thanksgiving1225

Sarah sent me this pic later on to reassure me that Samantha eventually calmed down. Daniel Tiger and cereal never fail.

IMG_3351

It was so fun to hang out with the beautiful bride, Kati, at her reception and to meet her new husband. David, who coincidentally served in the same Spain mission as Jake. Kati and David live in DC, but hopefully, we’ll be able to make it out there for a history-themed trip with Samantha and Amelia soon. Congrats to the happy newlyweds!

When I was the editor of our high school newspaper, Kati and I used to jam out to ABBA during our late-night deadline sessions at school, so it was only fitting that she had all the ladies come out to dance to “Dancing Queen.” Since no one needed to see a pregnant lady jamming out on the dance floor, I came out for the ladies’ dance, but definitely toned it down a bit.

My other wedding favorites included Kati’s ice cream and sprinkle bar along with catching up with Erica and all the amazing things she’s doing as director of performing arts at her charter school. We need a book club reunion soon, ladies!

kati's wedding

We arrived home from the reception with a good report from Grammy and Aunt Sarah– the girls had fallen fast asleep while Grammy read stories to them. Thanks for the free babysitting!

A few hours before we left for our trip home, we had Faux Thanksgiving, since we wouldn’t be in town on actual Thanksgiving Day. It was nice to have a relaxing dinner and catch up with the Brodeurs, Sarah and Mike, and Mike and Ali, particularly since the girls napped through all but ten minutes of our feast!

IMG_3376

IMG_3377

Thanks, Sarah, for the yummy food pics, Dad for the turkey and Mom, of course, for the delicious feast! Way too much food, as per the usual. This year we had a stuffing and pie contest, in which the regular pies and stuffings beat out the gluten-free, dairy-free kind. Alas, some recipes are just better left untouched.

15Thanksgiving1288

Sarah’s Mike brought the very fitting Turkey Butter, which the girls found fascinating.

15Thanksgiving1287

We woke the girls up from naps so they could enjoy a little bit of Grammy’s Thanksgiving feast before we had to leave to make our flight out. The girls’ favorites were definitely the turkey, sweet potatoes and pie. Lots of pie.

IMG_0229

We were so sad to have to eat and run since the best part about Thanksgiving is lounging around after the big meal. The girls were tired for our flight back home and were awesome again on the plane, despite a few hiccups over who got the bigger lollipop. Our arrangement with Amelia and I in the front and Jake and Samantha directly behind us worked out well for the second time.

IMG_3378

IMG_3379

Bye bye, plane.

IMG_3383

Hitching a ride.

IMG_3384

The girls fell asleep on the car ride home and awoke the next day, crying that they weren’t at Grammy’s. We can’t win!

Thanks Grammy, Papa, Aunt Sarah, Uncle Mike, other Uncle Mike, and Ali for a Happy Faux Thanksgiving!

Lots of love,

Thanksgiving II

After running the Turkey Trot and taking a long nap, we ate our own Thanksgiving dinner before packing up when the girls fell asleep for the night and heading out to Aunt Linda and Uncle David’s for Second Thanksgiving!
When the girls awoke the next morning, they were pleasantly surprised to find all sorts of interesting new desert creatures!
S and A were entertained pushing their dollies around the yard and saying hi to Rusty the Ram, the cat and dog, the tiki, the flamingos and the turtles.
And don’t forget Santa!
So nice to hang out with cousins Jack, Eleri and Rhys, who were great entertainers of the girls.
Jack and Jake played cards most of the time, with the girls joining in for 52 pickup.
The girls wanted to show Aunt Linda all their toys.
Now we know where the girls’ crazy hair comes from! Sorry about the screaming, Great Uncle Johnny.
Scooter gang.
If only this place had a park…

Amelia’s wish was granted. Before dinner, we walked over to the girls’ new favorite park. The stagecoach was by far the girls’ (and everyone’s) favorite climbing structure.

The horse was a close second. The kids had fun pretending it was sinking in quick sand.
I could be entertained for hours watching Amelia try and walk straight after spinning in this thing.
Thrill junkie.
The Day After Thanksgiving Dinner!
Samantha’s favorite new condiment: horseradish. She couldn’t stop dipping her fingers in it!
After such a yummy dinner, we were almost too stuffed for pie. Almost. After gorging on dessert, everyone went into a post-Thanksgiving coma and conked out for the night. Thanks for preparing that huge meal, Aunt Linda, Uncle David and Aunt Annie!
Despite Samantha and Amelia waking up crying several times that night, they were raring to go by the morning.

S and A hired Rhys and Eleri to drive the stagecoach across the desert for them.

Swings!

So nice to spend some quality time with Daddy. The girls wouldn’t let go of him!

Climbing Everest a four-foot rock wall.

Entertain us, Great Uncle David!

Cousin fun.

Samantha of Arabia.
Before saying goodbye, the kids helped put up Christmas decorations.
It’s been fun starting to teach S and A all the Christmas vocabulary. They caught onto “reindeer,” “Santa,” and “snowman” pretty quickly.
Eleri had to teach the girls how to put up the Christmas decals on the windows properly. S and A’s first inclination was to eat them.
Cousin love!

After all the excitement, we packed up and the girls napped the entire way home. Fun was had by all, memories were made, and it was so nice to see the girls bonding with family. A huge thank you to our hosts, Great Aunt Linda and Great Uncle David! We hope all those fingerprints on the windows washed off nicely and that your flamingoes aren’t permanently damaged!

Lots of love,
