Thanksgiving 2017

Our third annual Friendsgiving with the Erpelding family was hosted at our house this year! Our two families were joined by Great Grandpa, Sheela’s mom, who was visiting from Richmond, VA and Sheela’s best friend from Richmond but who now lives in Japan with her family came into town last minute to spend time with Sheela, so we had them over too! With 20 of us, it was a full house! The older kids were awesome helping with the little ones and we split who was responsible for which dish, so with all that team effort, it was a relatively easy-going Thanksgiving!

Ready to go before the feast begins.

We brined the turkey in a huge bucket of salt water and spices two days before, patted it dry and let is sit overnight in the fridge and then roasted it for a few hours on Thanksgiving. The result was a juicy, tender and crispy on the outside turkey that everyone gobbled up.

Our friend, Michael, has a wet stone for knife sharpening and graciously agreed to sharpen all of our knives prior to Thanksgiving. Our super sharp knives felt like brand-new!

The Erpeldings brought a delicious honey-baked ham, yummy green bean casserole, yummy marshmallow sweet potato casserole, their traditionaly yummy sauerkraut, and yummy pumpkin and pecan pies. We contributed the turkey, rolls, pecan-crusted sweet potato casserole, garlic mashed potatoes, regular mashed potatoes, cornbread stuffing, cranberry sauce, mini pumpkin pie desserts for the kids and homemade apple pie from the girls’ school’s fundraiser. We all had leftovers for days! Everything was homemade, but if I had to do it over again, I would definitely outsource the rolls… no matter how many times I try them, I am not a good bread/roll maker! We were in luck that the weather was unusually warm this Thanksgiving and was 85 degrees in the afternoon! The kids worked on crafts before dinner and because they seemed content playing outside, the adults went ahead and started eating first, inside.

Halfway through our dinner, the kids all decided they were hungry, so we took a little break to dish everyone up and let them loose outside where they feasted at their kids’ tables. Meredith sat inside on Sheela’s lap and ate, along with Ulala’s adorable baby, Emi, in the high chair.

Samantha and Owen dine together.

Lily put together a fun montage of photos she took, which was great since I was so busy hosting that I didn’t get any pictures! The Musicaly app she uses has a time limit, so you have to pause to look at all the pictures closely!

After dinner, the kids partied in the hot tub and pool. I’m sure our neighbors were wondering what kind of raucous Thanksgiving we were having!

I was in the kitchen getting out the desserts, when all of a sudden, I heard a loud chorus of “Pie! Pie! Pie!” coming from outside. Apparently, the kids were out of the pool and ready for dessert!

Great Grandpa and Meredith with their tummies full!

Our biggest ever Friendsgiving was a huge success thanks to everyone’s team work. We’re thankful to have such great family and friends! Happy Thanksgiving!

Neighborhood Adventures

I wouldn’t normally put “fun” and “moving” in the same sentence, but one of the more enjoyable aspects of moving has been exploring the new neighborhood. We are only ten minutes away from our old house and already knew this area pretty well, but it’s different being a resident. Almost every afternoon this summer, we’ve been out discovering all the local parks, splash pads, and best biking paths. The twins have been busy finding all the best patches of flowers to pick and discovering all the new bugs (box elder beetles really seem to love our new neighborhood). Bandit’s favorite new spot is the trail on the hill behind our house and Meredith loves “walking” him there, stopping to pick flowers along the way. We love being able to walk or bike to several little parks, splash pads, the water park, and the elementary school and library. It’s been a summer of adventures right in our own backyard!

Biking to the park.

Many afternoons, we just hang out at home and have friends over to swim. There are several pools within walking distance to us, but I don’t think we’ve been even once this summer, just because it’s so nice to not have to load up the car to cool off.

Meredith loves saying hello to Jodi’s yet-to-be born little boy.

Toddler playdate with Maple.

Forget the craft or playroom– everyone’s favorite room is our empty living room!

Water table fun.

Morning swim date with Amy, Sheela and their crews.

Can’t decide on a floatie? Just throw them all in!

Our first official overnight guests were Jake’s nieces, Lacey and Olivia, who were taking a summer road trip from Utah after graduating high school. The twins were fascinated with all their makeup and clothes and basically shadowed them the entire time.

Italian soda night.Ā

Frolicking at the cute splash pad down the street.

Our favorite neighborhood attraction has been the little kids water park, and since residents are only allowed to bring five guests at a time, we’ve slowly been cycling through invitations to our friends. The girls were happy Nate could make it!

Meredith usually spends the entire time snacking.

After a morning at the water park with Crystal’s girls, the twins finally worked up the courage to stand beneath the bucket to get drenched!

Meredith’s favorite splash pad.

Exhausted from running around, filling up buckets of water, and pouring them down the slide to make a water slide with Gavin, Owen and Parker, everyone took a break.

Break time for babies.

Take away our snacks? Oh no you didn’t.

Meredith throws a fit and thrashes around if I put her in the puddle jumpers and try and swim with her, but with Jake, she’s as calm as can be.

Those cheeks.

More snacking.

Staring at the fascinating flecks of color on the floor! Summer lounging at its finest.

5 Things We’re Loving Right Now

  1. Ā Dinners at the park.

Can’t beat leaving the mess there and built-in entertainment. We’ve been having picnic lunch or dinners weekly, either by ourselves or with friends, and I’m sure the girls would be okay with eating at the park every night if they had their way.

Playing crack the egg with the Erpeldings, who hosted taco night at the park.

Amelia, Grace and Samantha love to hang out together at the Coto park and play duck, duck goose. The girls’ version is a loose interpretation in which whoever is tagged as the “goose” runs around the entire park a few times before sitting down. Sometimes, both twins will get up and run around, even if only one twin is tagged. All rules are thrown out the window!

The girls climbed up the rock to get away from the “baby monster.”

More park fun: pushing Allie on the swings at Sendero.

2. Being Helper of the Day

The Helper of the Day at preschool is in charge of preparing the snack that day (i.e. MOM does it all)Ā , raising the flag, selecting who gets to be dismissed for snack and playtime first, feeding the goldfish and birds, AND gets to sit next to the teacher during preschool. Obviously, this is a huge deal, and Samantha and Amelia ask me every preschool day if one of them is the helper that day, at which point they don’t just take my word for it, but have to look on my phone calendar to verify.

I also have to prepare for a massive meltdown in the morning for whoever is NOT the Helper of the Day. Amelia is assigned to be the helper at preschool about twice a month since she has less kids in her class, while Samantha is the helper every three weeks or so. We are 3/4 into the year, and neither of them have learned to tame their jealousy when it comes to the other twin being the helper. Samantha is the helper at the end of this week, and I’m already trying to think of ways to break the news gently to Amelia.

3. Tricks

Samantha and Amelia are constantly beingĀ jokers around the house, stuffing used food wrappers in our shoes, unrolling toilet paper, and hiding little toys in my makeup drawer. On April Fool’s, it was my turn for revenge!

I told the girls there were some brownies in the oven and asked if they could help me get them out. Brownies for breakfast!

They were confusedĀ when they found Brown E’s in the pan, and just kind of looked at me like, “What kind of person would do this???”

Still not really getting it…

Unperturbed, they were even more excited to find lollipops on their plates.

Broccoli lollipops, that is.

In a strategic bid to act like my tricks didn’t faze them, they actually ate the broccoli!

4. Tumblebees

This should actually be a favorite thing for Samantha, more than Amelia. The girls moved up to the Tumblebee Squad a few months ago and now get to be on a team, learning new moves on the high bars and balance beam in the big gym. Amelia has a hard time transitioning from place to place or activity to activity, and is often shy about entering class, but Samantha usually grabs her hand and leads her in. There’s been a few times where Samantha has completed class solo while Amelia sat out on the bench with me and Meredith,Ā but Samantha has really shined, even without her sis in class.

5. Science Experiments

Many afternoons after naps, we’ve been busy exploring, investigating, experimenting and thinking up any excuse to put on lab goggles. Amelia’s favorite activity is coloring a tray of vinegar with food coloring and using a dropper to squirt the colored vinegar into a pan of baking soda and watching it bubble, foam, and create a rainbow.

Amelia is obsessed with bones and the human body. She’s always asking where things are in the body and what they do, followed byĀ about a million BUT WHY’s????

The girls used a chisel and hammer to score the circumference of a geode and then crack it open to find beautiful crystals inside. This was one of their favorite activities of all time!

When no one was looking, Meredith absconded with the geodes.Ā She wanted to be a part of the action too!

6. Honorable mention: I don’t have a picture for this one, but I had to add on another favorite thing– Moana. As the twins’ movie of choice for our weekly Family Movie Night for the past four weeks, Moana has officially surpassed FrozenĀ as their favorite (angels SING!). They are constantly belting outĀ “No one knoooooooooows; how far it gooooooooes!” and enjoy pretending to be that creepy, shiny crab. I was excited to watch their new favorite movie the first few weeks, but now it’s starting to get old, with no end in sight!

7. I just thought of another runner-up: the Frog and Toad book series. I don’t even know how many times I’ve had to explain which one is Frog and which one is Toad, even though the girls ask to read one of the series at least twice a day. The girls especially love the tale of “Cookies” and “Dragons and Giants,” and usually request a dramatic retelling of those stories at bedtime, in which they are the main characters.

There are so many other favorite things coming to mind, but I will have to save them for another post! Four is fun!

Lots of love,

Thanksgiving Preschool Potluck and Friendsgiving

Samantha and Amelia kicked off their Thanksgiving week with a feast at their preschool. I volunteered to help the kids make their special placemats the week before Thanksgiving, and the twins seemed pretty nonchalant with me coming in to both classes that day. Ā During the Thanksgiving Feast, however, Amelia freaked out when I went to help serve the food in Samantha’s class… so much so, that she would hardly touch her food. The girls were both a little weirded out by the whole potluck since they don’t normally stay for lunch at preschool, so I think being off their normal routine, plus having me there, became the perfect storm for having an off day.

It was quite the feast! The parents and teachers had a good time sampling everything after serving the kids, but next time, I’m thinking we should all sit down and have the kids serve us!

I came back to comfort Amelia after stepping eight feet away into Samantha’s class to help serve the food. Once her belly was full of turkey and dessert came around, she seemed to be in better spirits.

Samantha tried every dish and thought the whole potluck thing was a swell idea.

Amelia was proud of her turkey hat.

Some of the kids barely tried their food, but magically became hungry again after the pumpkin roll made an appearance.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I’m having a hard time picking and choosing which crafts of the girls’ to keep now that they are coming home with something every day, and the clutter-hater inside me wants to keep the paper at bay. We usually hang them up for a few weeks, and then I take pictures and store a few of them in the girls’ portfolios. It’s already pretty full– can’t imagine 15 more years of paper! Some of the girls’ crafts this month:

I had fun working with Samantha and Amelia’s classes on their Thanksgiving placemats earlier in November.

img_1716 img_1732

This was the first year the twins were a little more aware as to what Thanksgiving was all about, so it was our first year doing a Thankful Tree at home. I had grand plans of making a cute tree with lighted branches, but ended up just telling the girls to go out back and pick whatever branches they could find. At dinner (i.e. whenever we remembered), we’d write down what we were thankful for. S and A repeated each other, Meredith, mom and dad, and Bandit pretty much every time, so we had to teach them to think outside of the box a little! We took the tree down at the end of November, but the girls have been asking where the Thankful Tree is, so maybe we need to keep this tradition year round?

In a moment of annoyance that the girls were whining aboutĀ something or other one morning, I had them watch a short YouTube documentary clip about a boy named Juan who lived near a trash dump in Mexico and picked up trash with his family for a living. I was thoroughly depressed watching it, but the girls were fascinated and, at the very least, I think they may have an inkling of understanding about how blessed they are to live in a house and have plenty of food.

Now, whenever the girls whine, I remind them about Juan. Out of the blue the other day, Amelia proclaimed she wanted to give some of her toys to kids who picked up trash and didn’t have any toys, and she suggested giving away her favorite stuffed animal, a stuffed cougar. Touched my heart! Samantha added that she, too, would like to give some toys away to those less fortunate, and suggested giving away “Amelia’s piggy.” We’re still working on her.

Meredith was stoked for her first Thanksgiving! This girl loooooooves food.

The next day on actual Thanksgiving, it was time for Friendsgiving at the Erpeldings. Sheela and Todd were so gracious to host us, Sheela’s dad, and their other friends, Christine, Ragnar and their toddler, Annabel. The best part was having our feast at 11:30 a.m.! Best Thanksgiving idea ever! We all stuffed ourselves, the kids played and then we went home for a nap! THE BEST.

We brought the stuffing and cranberries, Christine and Ragnar brought some delicious pie, and Sheela, Todd and the kids put together some amazing sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, rolls, turkey, honey baked ham, and Todd’s specialty, sauerkraut! Sammy actually tried it and liked it! It was truly a team effort as Avery and Owen showed off their battle scars from peeling potatoes… way to go, kids!

Deciding on the menu, running around to gather all the groceries and supplies, getting the house ready and preparing all that food was no easy feat, but Sheela made it look easy! We were so grateful to spend a fun Thanksgiving sharing a nice meal with friends and hanging out.

img_1604

With seven kids, plus Meredith, we had quite the lively kids table. Surprisingly, in between wiping mouths, fulfilling requests for more sweet potatoes, and picking up dropped silverware, the adults were able to enjoy our meal as well.

img_1609

Samantha and Amelia had seconds (and thirds in a few cases) and were the last ones to leave the table. Actually, Meredith was the last to leave the table… she looked like a stuffed little turkey by the time she was done.

img_1612

Such a cute kids table.

img_1607

The girls were occupied coloring on the tablecloth and playing with their friends. Somehow, toys at someone else’s house are always more interesting than our own.

img_1598

Yum!

img_1608

Meredith gorgedĀ herself on turkey, rolls, potatoes, sweet potatoes and green beans. She had a little taste of pie and was quite angry we hadn’t been feeding her that the whole time.

img_1610

With a new floor to explore, Meredith was in heaven before a post-Thanksgiving coma hit her and she napped all afternoon.

img_1615

We had so much to be grateful for this Thanksgiving and were so thankful to celebrate with our little family and great friends!

Lots of love,
