May Photo Recap

May was beautiful with lots of outdoor time! It wasn’t too hot, which was perfect for my hugely pregnant self!

Samantha boogies at the park.

Apparently, everyone was in a good mood at the park today!

Snacking and lounging at the Lake Forest Sports Park.

Our caterpillars finally emerged into butterflies and after a few days of trying to keep Meredith from poking them, it was time to let them fly free (likely to get eaten by the plethora of hungry birds in our backyard seconds later).

Our neighbor had the cutest flower planting/gardening birthday party and one of the games was eating donuts off a string. Very entertaining for the parents!

Meredith totally cheated!

One perk of Jake being on the Board of Directors is being invited to special events, like this private party at the water park for Board Members and volunteers in our community. It was a little chilly, but the kids didn’t care and due to the live steel drum/reggae band and catered dinner, if I closed my eyes, I imagined I was in the Bahamas for just a second…

Meredith made a new friend!

The girls’ favorite part was the ice cream sundae bar.

Arts and crafts time.

I was lounging by the pool when Jake was with the kids at the craft table. He later told me there were some old lady volunteers nearby whom he overheard remark, “Did you see that lady in the blue and gray? She looked like she should have given birth YESTERDAY!” And then I walked up to Jake about two seconds later and they realized I was with him haha! Gossipy old ladies!

Knocking over the Jenga tower was a huge source of contention, so we left when the girls started fighting!

The end-of-the-year fundraiser at the girls’ preschool was the Helicopter Golf Ball Drop, which like last year, was a huge hit with the kids. Meredith couldn’t believe she got to see a helicopter so up close, and one dropping hundreds of golf balls to boot!

Another highlight was finding this eerily friendly bunny on the green.

I wish the kids would pick up their toys at home as fast as they picked up these golf balls after the big drop.

The girls were so excited to meet up at the splash pad with Noah and Hailey who were visiting town. Cousin time!

Hailey was not too happy about Meredith constantly being in her face!

Noah and the girls making mud pies.

We started our yearly swim lessons with Miss Conni and Miss Erica and the twins worked on their freestyle stroke, began learning the butterfly and breaststroke and of course, had fun on the diving board. Meredith does her own separate swim lesson with Miss Conni that Jake takes her too and Miss Conni says Meredith is a natural! She looks forward to her Daddy time twice a week and is the only kid in the class who can jump off the diving board and float to her back. I need to remind Jake to take some pictures and video of her, because every time I go to the twins’ lesson, Miss Conni raves about Meredith.

A monthly recap would not be complete without documenting squabbles and fights. There’s a lot more where this came from.

Meredith begs to sleep in the twins’ room every day at nap! This month, Meredith also had her first impromptu day of preschool. I had to be at school setting up decorations for Teacher Appreciation Week and asked Miss Debbie if Meredith could join the toddler class while I was setting up. Meredith didn’t bat an eye or say goodbye to me– she joined the other kids right away and had the time of her life! We were there all morning and Miss Ericka said she was the star of the class!

Our new pool cleaners.

Don’t know that much pool cleaning is going on.

S’mores time in our backyard fireplace.

Who you looking at?

Weekly park playdate with friends.

A rough day for Amelia!

Experimenting with curlers.

Highlight of the month: playing with this enormous box for a few days until I got sick of it being in our garage and threw it out, to the girls’ great disappointment.

I can’t believe the girls had never actually done a pinata before, but they got their chance at Allie’s birthday party. Meredith was especially fascinated with the concept of whacking something with a bat and collecting the candy that spilled out.

At the end of their ballet/yoga class, the girls do a relaxation time and then a craft– their favorite part!

Movie night.

I spend a good majority of my afternoon ignoring tattle tales over who knocked over their block towers.

Playing with neighbors at the pocket park.

We spent pretty much every weekend in May working on projects. Meredith helps Daddy with the closet floor!

Lazy hammock afternoon.

Samantha and her acrobatics.

This is how Meredith wakes up:

Meredith’s crazy toddler tantrum side:

Sweetly singing!

Our ward went on a Memorial Day morning hike to the top of a peak in San Juan Capistrano overlooking the ocean. At 9 months pregnant, I stayed home, with Jake braving the hike by himself. I was concerned it was 3 miles roundtrip and really steep, but the girls did great, even though they were the last ones up the trail!

At the top, they signed the visitor book and sang some patriotic songs before heading back down. Apparently, our Bishop helped push Meredith in the stroller while Jake carried both exhausted twins on his shoulders!

A sweet post-hike reward.

And the Award for First Twin to Break Her Arm Goes To…

And the award for the first twin to break her arm goes to….

Any guesses?

Samantha! On August 13, all of us were at the little park by our house and Samantha was playing on the zipline, no more than six feet off the ground. On one ill-fated attempt, Jake pushed her a little too hard to give her a head start going down and when she hit the end of the line, she fell off, landing right on her right wrist, arm, shoulder and face. The playscape beneath was the soft, squishy kind, but she was hysterical and was obviously in a lot of pain.

Thinking it had just scared her and that maybe it was a sprain, we tried to console her onto her bike to ride home so we could ice it, but she would have none of it. Crying and gripping her arm, she walked home while Jake rode his bike and carried her bike, Meredith rode on the back of my bike, and Amelia trailed behind on her bike, screaming and crying that her “arm hurt toooooooo!” and that she wanted Daddy to carry her bike.

I arrived home first and could hear the rest of the wailing crew coming down the cul de sac from inside the house!

We iced Samantha’s arm and she laid on the couch next to an equally hysterical Amelia, who insisted on having an ice pack for her “injured” arm as well. Maybe they have some weird connection and she really does feel pain when her sister does, but it sure was annoying to have the non-injured twin throwing a fit and complicating things even more. Samantha was obviously in a lot of pain throughout the day and both twins were too tired from the ordeal to go to church, so we wrapped her wrist until we could go to the doctor in the morning. We figured it was likely a sprain, but at no point did I ever guess it was actually broken! She could bend and move her wrist, all her fingers and her arm, and I had no idea!

In the mean time, that day, Noah came over to play after we attended the memorial service of Auntie Lynn’s dear friend and our adopted “Aunt,” Marsha. Her passing was unexpected and we will miss her infectious laugh and bubbly personality. She’s been a staple at all of Auntie Lynn’s parties and has attended all of our birthday parties, showers, family events and even brought meals to us when the twins and Meredith were born. Such a sweet, generous, adventurous, and amazing soul who will be dearly missed.

We love you, Marsha!

Noah played with us while his parents were at the dinner for the memorial.

With her sore arm, Samantha did not feel like swimming and sat forlornly on the spa.

After a rough night of tossing and turning due to her sore arm, Sammy woke up, still complaining about her arm. Jake took her to the pediatrician who said she definitely needed an x-ray, so off to the orthopedist they went that afternoon. After nervously checking my phone for the verdict every five seconds, Jake finally texted me the x-ray and the news: it was broken!

Fortunately, it hadn’t broken near the growth plate, but both the ulna and radius of her right arm had small breaks and her arm would need a cast. The ortho said they weren’t bad breaks and would only take a month or so to heal, but we still felt so bad for poor Sammy and were shocked she had broken it from such a low height. She fell on it in exactly the right place. Sammy came back from ortho with her latest accessory, bright pink of course.

We explained that usually when people get casts, it’s fun to let friends sign it and decorate it with a marker, but Samantha would have none of that. So it remains plain bright pink!

The cast helped with Samantha’s pain considerably, and life resumed back to normal, with the occasional complaint of it being really itchy (the ortho told her not to stick anything down the cast herself, but when she gets itchy, we’ve been using popsicle sticks to give her some relief). Amelia, on the other hand, was a complete wreck for the first few days. From not getting to go with Daddy to the special doctor’s appointment, to all the attention Samantha got wherever she went with her cast, Amelia was feeling left out and extremely jealous! We’ve tried to make her feel special by spending extra one-on-one time with her and creating opportunities for her to be helpful by acting as a nurse, but it’s hard to convince a four-year-old that she’s doesn’t really want a cast!

But can you really blame her? Since birth, Samantha has always been the one needing the extra medical attention! First the helmet to correct her plagiocephaly from the womb when she was a baby, spending the night in the ICU after swallowing Visine eye drops as a 15-month-old,  then the glasses to correct the farsightedness in her right eye, and now the cast! It’s always Samantha, Samantha, Samantha!

I’m seeing a pattern…

After a few days, the novelty of the cast had worn off, and Amelia stopped her fits of rage and jealousy, even volunteering the whole story of how Samantha broke her arm whenever anyone asked and Samantha was too shy to share. Life resumed semi-back to normal.

At first, Samantha was very discouraged trying to do all the things she normally does with the annoyance of the heavy cast on her arm. We’ve tried to make a game out of it, counting all the things she CAN do with it and praising her for finding ways to be independent. She’s learned how to climb her bunk-bed ladder one-handed, can get dressed and undressed for the most part, can ride on the swings, eat with her fork, and even write and draw left-handed!

My initial thought when she received her cast was, “Oh noooooo! What are we going to do the rest of the summer??!!” But thanks to the marvels of modern technology, her cast is waterproof, so going swimming and taking baths has not been a problem, as long as she stays out in the sun or we hair dry it to help dry it out so it’s not uncomfortable.

Meredith and Maple on their toddler playdate.

It’s nice we don’t have to worry about water, but a huge ordeal has been the sand! She can’t get any sand in her cast or else it becomes super itchy, but try wrapping a plastic bag around an active four-year-old’s arm whose favorite pastime is making cupcakes in the sand. NOT happening. We remind her to be careful at the park and preschool around the sand and her teachers keep an eye on her, but that’s about all we can do. We’ve had to intervene with a popsicle stick to relieve the itching more than once!

Having never broken a bone myself, I can only imagine how uncomfortable and annoying it is for Samantha, but Jake, on the other hand, has broken pretty much every bone in his body at one time or another and entertained the girls with fascinating stories of different incidents, including an exciting four-wheeling accident resulting in a spiral fracture in his femur and having to sit out the entire basketball season in a cast up to his hip. Samantha and Jake now have a little bonding experience to share! Samantha was also fascinated to learn that Aunt Sarah once broke her arm falling off a swing during the summer and, assuming it was just a bad sprain, Grammy didn’t take her in for an x-ray until the next day either! I don’t feel so bad about waiting a day…

Nap time…

Samantha can still do her ballet and yoga… she just has to get a little creative!

Swinging? Check.

In addition to the itchiness, Samantha’s major complaint has been how blazing hot the cast makes her feel. She’s definitely been on the cranky side the past few weeks from not being able to get comfortable while sleeping due to overheating. Meltdowns have been on the increase since her cast and we’ve tried to make her as comfortable as possible. In the end, breaking an arm is no fun, but overall, she’s taken it in stride.

Tempting fate on the tire swing… there’s no stopping Samantha when she wants to do something. We’ve been back to the infamous zipline park, but she understandably has not expressed interest in riding the zipline again.

The lack of cast now makes it easier for their friends to recognize which one is Amelia!

She will get her cast sawed off on September 10, so only a few more weeks to go. In other medical news, Samantha had a check-up at the opthamologist’s and her eyesight in the right eye has improved considerably, as has her depth perception. She’ll still need the glasses for at least a year, but hopefully at this rate, she may not need them forever as her right eye gets stronger and her depth perception improves.

There’s never a dull moment around here!

Forced Labor (Grace & Zen Showcase)

The twins may not be performing on Broadway any time soon as they were less than enthused about performing in the showcase for their dance and yoga class. Their regular class includes ballet, yoga, relaxation time with quiet music and lavender sachets over their eyes (ha!) and “mindful” coloring at the end (pictures like a mandala with “peace begins with me” underneath). Miss Nikki is really fun and the whole class is relaxed, as was their recital, which we appreciated! They normally are excited about their class and at least look like they are having fun, but watching the girls for the recital was hilarious as they put the most minimal effort possible into each move and looked like they were performing under duress the entire time!

Samantha and Amelia look so much older than the other kids in their class, but it’s just because they are tall!

Before the showcase, the girls agreed on a pact to look bored and put in the least effort possible.

Downward dog– they love practicing this one at home.

Frog pose!

Yoga time!

Is it over yet?

Bravo, sisters!

All that effort for a cookie…

Post-Camping Spring Break 2017

After our camping excursion, we spent the rest of the girls’ Spring Break hanging out and enjoying a leisurely and mostly unplanned week together. Instead of rushing off to preschool three days a week, we ate breakfast for as long as we wanted and the twins did puzzles and crafts during Meredith’s morning nap. After Meredith woke up, we went to the park, the pool or a class and napped/played the rest of the afternoon. I thought the week would drag by having the twins home in the morning an extra three days a week, but it was nice not rushing anywhere and not feeling like a chauffeur for a change. I don’t know if it’s their age or skills learned at preschool, but the twins are mostly cooperative playing together and occupying themselves without much intervention from me. Meredith absolutely adored having them around as her constant entertainment, too!

An outing to the playground and sensory garden in San Clemente:

The girls requested to do soccer again (I’m thinking the fact that Daddy takes them and gets them a gatorade afterward may have something to do with it, since it didn’t seem like they were way into soccer last go around!) One of our friends is from the UK and is a director for Playtime Adventure, which brings UK soccer coaches out here to lead a cute intro program for preschoolers. It’s a lot of games, running, hula hoops and a little bit of kicking soccer balls thrown into the mix. The timing is tough since I have to wake the girls up from their naps to make it on time. so they were groggy and cranky at their first practice, but claimed they liked it.

According to Jake, this is how most of the practice went down:

Pool time with the Wrights. Meredith was totally not interested, and I chased her around the perimeter of the pool the entire time.

At Pretend City, Meredith was finally old enough to really interact with the exhibits and her sisters were proud to show her around.

Meredith’s favorite place as of late has been the car… unless I try and buckle her in. The minute I open the garage, she starts hitting the car and squawking, toddler speak for open up! She likes to crawl all around the car and get in the driver’s seat. I’ve learned to let her play for at least ten minutes before we have to go anywhere or else have to summon up superhuman strength manhandling a screaming, strong toddler into her seat. Her favorite word recently is, “NO, NO, NO!”

A happy morning at the park. I must have had at least 450 birthday celebrations so far this year as the girls like to bake me birthday cakes and cupcakes three to four times a day in the sand. I’m always obligated to stick around for the birthday song and blowing out of candles to make it complete.

The girls’ Grace and Zen class is our all time favorite! It’s all very low-key and fun, with the kids learning cool animal yoga poses, a few simple ballet moves, and then they get to read a book, color an inspirational coloring page (last week’s was a mandala with the words “Peace begins with me”), and relax at the end with soothing music and an eye pillow scented with lavender. I really wish they had this exact same class for adults, coloring page included, because I would definitely be there.

Gymnastics with Meredith is wild and crazy. She will sit in her stroller with snacks for about fifteen minutes, before shrieking to get out and from then on, it’s just me chasing her everywhere. Unless I can find a class for them on the weekend or get a sitter for Meredith, the girls’ gymnastics days may be ending soon!

Due to Samantha’s eye appointments, Meredith and Amelia have been going on some Daddy-daughter lunch dates at the Spectrum by his work and have enjoyed having some special time together.

For my birthday, the girls each wrote and chose the illustrations for books they created at Storymakery. Sammy made me into a mommy fairy, while Amelia chose to make me into a mermaid. They loved authoring their first books and have made more at home with construction paper, marker and staples (which have turned out just as cute and creative, if not more so).

Meredith found no need to write a story when the keyboard was so entertaining.

Sammy shows off her favorite hair accessory and road rash from a biking accident.

The girls were looking at old pictures and came across the ones Aunt Sarah took of them in their dressers. They decided to recreate the look!

Somehow, the girls woke up and snuggled in my bed while I was showering, and pretended to be fast asleep when I found them.

During the frantic rush of routines that is bedtime, Meredith was reading by herself at the bottom of the stairs! While the twins love storytime now, they could never sit still long enough to so much as look at a picture book at that age. Meredith is so methodical with her page-turning, it really looks as if she’s reading! She will pull books off the shelf and bring them to me every nap and bedtime, flip through most of the pages with me, and then jump off my lap to select a new book. When things get chaotic, she just reads by herself!

Another Daddy Daughter date to cap off Spring Break!

Lots of love,
