Mother’s Day 2018

Let the Mother’s Day festivities begin!

In Samantha’s classroom for her Mother’s Day Breakfast. Thank you for the card and flower present, Samantha!

Popping by next door for Amelia’s Mother’s Day Breakfast and to receive her beautiful card and cute flower pot present that she had been so excited to give me all week that she had already told me what it was.

Mother’s Day Tea last year:

On Friday during Meredith’s nap time, the doorbell rang, and while I normally don’t answer the door at that hour, I luckily looked through my Ring app to see who it was and saw two guys who looked like movers with a truck. Thinking they had the wrong house, I opened the door and they handed me an invoice to sign for a piano. Before I could tell them they must have had the wrong address, they were sprinting to their truck to haul the piano out and I was scanning the invoice, which apparently did have my name on it!

Confused, I pointed out where to put the piano and apologized for not having a tip since I had no idea I was getting a piano! “Ummmmm…. did you buy a piano?” I texted Jake. Apparently, the movers weren’t supposed to deliver the piano until after he had gotten home from work, but they came early and even though they called him to give him a 20 minute warning and he left work immediately, there was an accident on the freeway and he was stuck in traffic, missing the movers by minutes. He was SO disappointed to have missed my reaction!

We had picked out and had been looking for a deal on a few different Yamahas we wanted in the fall, but had tabled it because we had so much other work on the house to pay for. Props to Jake because I am very hard to surprise and I was in total shock for a while! The twins had mentioned something that morning about my present being something musical, but I figured they were going to play me some kind of song on their harmonica or sing; amazing they didn’t completely spill the beans! So happy to have a piano again and thank you, Jake for a great Mother’s Day present!

All the girls were SO excited to have a piano and wanted to “practice” on it constantly. Capitalizing on the twins’ enthusiasm, we started piano lessons with Miss Jenny right away. They are so quiet and compliant during lessons that Miss Jenny always remarks on what good girls they are (little does she know how loud they can be!) Meredith is usually running around like crazy and it’s been a challenge keeping her quiet and occupied during lessons, but she loves to listen in.

The first few weeks went great with practicing, with the twins eager to be the first one to practice. After the initial excitement wore off, however, their enthusiasm for practicing has started to wane. Amelia almost always volunteers to go first and seems to be picking it up easier and with more excitement than Samantha. At first, I wondered if I should be paying for lessons given that at this stage, I could teach them myself, but after a few practice sessions and seeing the difference with how they are with Miss Jenny vs. Mommy, I am so glad we started them with a teacher! They are goofy and complain with me; even at this beginner level, I get so frustrated! I am grateful to have Miss Jenny be the reason I bribe them to practice since they want to do well for her (plus she brings them Goldfish crackers!)

Back to Mother’s Day… gluten-free crepes and a smoothie for breakfast. Samantha looks like she sampled a little bit on the way up to deliver!

They’ve been making crepes for years! Mother’s Day 2015– these were almond flour/coconut flour crepes:

Thank you for all the beautiful presents, girls!

Not sure what half of this means… Jake said everyone was super silly while he was doing this interview.

Meredith apparently didn’t see much point in the interview and just wanted to color.

The beach is my happy place… when I don’t have to get anyone ready or pack/unpack the car! I literally handed Jake my beach packing list, complete with food items, and practiced a new song on the piano while he and the girls cleaned the kitchen after breakfast and packed up our beach gear. It wasn’t until everyone was buckled and the car was idling in the driveway, that I got in the car. Relaxing! We walked around the Montage in Laguna Beach and it was a beautiful day.

Down on the sand, Jake set up my beach chair and I relaxed while he ran around with the kids, fetched snacks for them every two seconds, and attempted to keep Meredith from throwing food at seagulls. After the clouds burned off, it got HOT fast and while the girls played for a good few hours, they burned out fast. We trekked back up the hill with three screaming girls, and I’m sure people were feeling bad for pregnant mom/tired dad and wondering why we were having a 4th! Even with the sun-induced meltdown, I was so relaxed from not having to do anything that morning that I was still in a good mood. Amazing what a little extra energy will do for you.

While Jake and the kids were at the far end of the beach climbing rocks, I read a book and watched from afar, only mildly concerned when I heard Meredith screaming since Jake looked like he was handling it. She returned with bumps and scrapes everywhere!

Surfer girl Samantha.

After a nap and church, Jake and the girls made a delicious steak dinner with a strawberry icebox cake for dessert, as per the menu I had given him the week prior to figure out (things go a lot smoother when he and the kids have some direction!) I also played the piano and forced the girls to sing a Mother’s Day related primary song since for some unfathomable reason, the primary didn’t have the kids sing any of the six Mother’s Day related songs during their program…not that the lyrics to any of the Mother’s Day songs are the greatest, but it only happens once a year and it’s cute!  The weekend was not without its meltdowns, but I felt appreciated nonetheless– thank you for a fun, relaxing and lovely Mother’s Day!

Treasure Island Beach Family Photos

While Aunt Sarah was in town, we seized the opportunity to have her and her camera tag along with us to Treasure Island Beach in Laguna. The girls normally cringe at the mention of “family photos,” but with Aunt Sarah along, it just felt like another day at the beach. The girls quickly ignored the camera and started playing once we were done taking a few posed shots. The rest are candid (which always turn out to be the best ones) and a perfect encapsulation of a typical beach outing (crazy running around, sandcastles, kite flying, random meltdowns/tears, and wind in our hair).

Meredith wasn’t in the best mood that morning (teenager), but Aunt Sarah worked her magic and snapped some cute ones of her anyway. Thanks for the beautiful photos and easy-going morning, Aunt Sarah!

Queen of the Nile, Meredith, escorted by her caravan.

Getting ready for her close-up.

We bribed the girls with gummies to get them all together for a family shot before everyone dispersed to play.

I selected outfits from what we already had for these beach photos, but since we found out a few weeks later that we’d be having another girl, the pink ensemble worked out perfectly!

Jump, Samantha!

Run, Meredith!

Jump, Amelia!

Moody teenager.

Chasing the birds.

Meredith’s death glare.

Kite flying is a dangerous sport. The kite almost killed us five times randomly nose-diving from the sky straight down.

Hanging with Grammy.

I’m ready to be carried away, servants.

This wagon ain’t gonna move itself, slaves.

More pink coming soon! Thanks, Aunt Sarah!

Weekend Fails

During the month of August, our weekends seemed cursed! We had two failed excursions back to back!

Disaster #1: Riding the trolley in Laguna Beach.

Being a yearly rite of passage, riding the trolley had been on the girls’ summer bucket list and I had been putting it off since we generally avoid Laguna in the summer at all costs. Between the influx of tourists and school being out, there’s an epic amount of traffic until Labor Day, turning a 20 minute drive into 40+, in addition to the fun of having no parking and being packed like sardines at the most popular beaches. During the summer, we tend to go south to the lesser known San Clemente beaches or up to Newport Coast, which has longer stretches of sand, more nature and less city. However, every year, we’ve braved the crowds and have ridden the trolley once every summer and figured with the start of school approaching, now was as good a time as any.

Last year’s trolley ride and walk down to Victoria Beach Castle in Laguna featured an epic fail of trying (and failing) to catch the trolley, but at least we had a scenic reward at the end:

So little last year!

This year, traffic was reasonable and we got lucky finding parking right next to a trolley stop. With the Arts Festival going on and it being Satuday night, the trolleys were running slow and we had to wait a good 30 minutes for one. Once it arrived, the girls were ecstatic to hop on.

Meredith rotated from seat to seat, sitting with random strangers and hugging people’s knees as she toddled her way down the aisle and back up. This was a small taste of what riding on an airplane would have been like with her…

The passengers gave a collective groan each time the trolley driver stopped to pick up more people. What started out as a reasonably full trolley soon became uncomfortably close quarters as the trolley let on more and more beachgoers, including a hoard of obnoxious middle school boys, another group of middle school girls who rolled eyes continuously at said boys, and a few dozen elderly tourists. It was hot, stinky, and the girls were completely melting down with hunger and boredom by the time we got off. Our mistake was staying on the trolley too long… instead of getting off at the first place to eat we saw, we decided to keep going closer to the downtown where there were more places to walk around. A 30 minute trolley ride with three hangry little girls was a recipe for disaster!

Meredith lightened the mood and cracked up all the passengers when she grabbed my phone and continously took selfies for 20 minutes, yelling, “Cheeeeeeeeeese!” the entire time.

We’ve never been so happy to get off a trolley! With the trolley now out of their system, our next stop was to find food: fast! We stopped at a healthy looking Mediterranean fast food place and while the food was decent enough, I was not happy when the bill totaled way more than the menu had stated. After expressing my confusion, the cashier explained that the prices of the salads we had ordered were not up on their menu, but that they were $15… talk about a scam!

He also had the audacity to comment that he couldn’t understand why our girls would be throwing a fit about having water instead of a soda (hangry and starving, the twins had seen sodas (which they never, ever have) in the cooler and when I ordered waters, their last shred of patience exploded and they started pitching a fit). Thank you for your parenting advice, random cashier worker. None of us were happy walking out of there and we ate our chicken skewers, basmati rice and the aforementioned overpriced salad in subdued silence by the beach.

Playtime before hopping back on the trolley.

The way back on the trolley was a much shorter trip, but not without its mishaps. Halfway through the ride, our trolley got hit by a car from the behind, sending Meredith and me, who were standing in the aisle, flying forward. No one got hurt, but the trolley driver had to pull over and call in the accident, which equated to an extra twenty-five minutes sitting on the non-moving trolley with three overtired  and claustrophobic minions.

The black Audi that hit the trolley didn’t even pull over and zoomed away around the corner,  so we were all venting about the hit and run while waiting for the driver to start back up. Thankfully, the good people of the trolley took turns passing Meredith back and forth over the seats. She loves people-watching and interacting with everyone and anyone! Meanwhile, the twins had moved seats a few rows back and were chatting it up with a little boy. Meredith made good friends with a twelve-year-old girl sporting a tiara… apparently they had gone out with her family to celebrate her birthday and her present was going to Paris. She had been earning the money for her trip since she was nine years old and was definitely an inspiration to the twins!

Our failed trolley ride excursion over, we limped back to our car and got home in record time to put everyone to bed. The very next day, Samantha broke her arm, further adding to our no good, very bad weekend!

Weekend Fail #2: The week after our failed trolley ride, Samantha became ill with a random fever. By the weekend, her fever was gone, but she was still feeling out of sorts. Amelia and Meredith seemed unaffected so Jake decided to get them out of the house and took them to a craft project at Michael’s. Parker, Maple, Phi and her sister, Mindy, were all there for the craft too and the girls had a blast painting kindness rocks and painting their names on canvas.

Phi texted me this picture a few minutes before Amelia threw up. Yes, threw up… in the aisles of Michael’s! Jake called me from the road saying, “We’re coming in hot… Amelia threw up and we need some soup ready!”

Apparently, everything was fine until Amelia started saying she felt cold and that her tummy hurt. While walking out, she threw up in the aisle, and thankfully, Phi was there to grab Meredith and help everyone to the car! I felt bad for not being there to help, but also grateful I wasn’t there to see that! Poor Amelia looked so pale when she got home and could barely slurp down any soup. Everyone took a record 4 hour nap and for the rest of the weekend Amelia, and then Meredith, went back and forth with fevers, chills, and coughing.

We usually do family movie night on Fridays, but this weekend and into the week, we watched a movie pretty much every day while the sicklings recovered. Even when sick, Meredith has a crazy amount of energy!

Doing pull-ups on the TV bar while watching 101 Dalmations.

Three little sick girls spent a lot of time sleeping that weekend and while we cancelled our weekend plans, it was nice just to lounge (especially when everyone was taking epically long naps). Hopefully, we’ve reached our quota of failed weekends for the coming months.

Lots of love,
