Double the Fun on the 4th! Part One.

The day before the 4th, we packed up the car and headed down to San Diego for our first mini get-away with the twins.

How is it possible that we hauled this much crap for two nights? Most of it turned out to be unneeded, but since this was our first overnight trip, I figured better safe than sorry.
The traffic was pretty bad getting down to San Diego, so once we arrived at the hotel, we only had a few hours to explore before bed. Fortunately, the girls were awesome in the car and slept the entire time.
Jake and Samantha exploring the view from our room.
I booked the room not knowing how good of a view we would have for the fireworks show on the bay, but it ended up being perfect! The fireworks were shot off from four barges out on the water. We could even see the Sea World fireworks during both nights of our stay.
Eating at 5:30 p.m. is the best! It was completely vacant, except for one other family with kids and a young couple…right next to whom the hostess sat us, even though the place was completely empty. I felt really bad and apologized to them in advance in case the girls decided to have a meltdown. To my surprise, the twins were happy the entire time. The waiter said he was impressed and told us we were doing a “great job juggling” as we ate with a fork in one hand and a baby in the other. The young couple kept curiously eyeing our table as we had pacifiers, bottles and wipes strewn everywhere. The husband remarked as we left that after watching us, his wife was getting baby hungry. I told them to come spend a day with us and she might change her mind!

We haven’t had a nice meal in so long that I went crazy taking pictures of our food. Beet salad. YUM.

No matter where we go, Jake always manages to find a pot pie on the menu somewhere.

The hotel was right on the marina, so we didn’t even have to pack up the car to go on an evening stroll along the boardwalk.

Having a view of both the bay and the city was nice!

Despite being in a new place, the girls went to bed just fine. Our routine stayed surprisingly similar to normal, except that we had to bathe the girls in the sink since the room didn’t have a bath tub. I was worried that we would need two port-a-cribs as the twins’ bassinet at home is a special extra-large one for twins, but the pack ‘n’ play that the hotel provided fit both the girls perfectly. Even though Jake thought I was nuts, I was so glad I brought my own crib sheets since the hotel ones looked sketchy.

“I’m on VACATION! I get to SLEEP IN!” said Samantha.
All ready for some 4th of July festivities!

On the 4th, we ate breakfast at a little bagel shop in the Gaslamp Quarter.

Here is Samantha not caring we are in San Diego or that is the 4th of July:

The only time the girls really had a hard time was any time we went up or down the elevator. Our room was on the 21st floor and the elevator was super fast…I think their ears must have hurt or something because they screamed every time we went up or down! That made for fun times when the elevator was crowded. Luckily, Jake is a genius and found a tucked-away service elevator that was always empty, so that’s what we used in order to spare others the scream-fest.

As soon as we got to the pool, we took a look around and figured, why pack up and go anywhere else? Lounging is pretty much what we did all morning. It’s amazing how with the girls, even just hanging out at the pool becomes exhausting after a while!
Amelia cracks me up.

So enthused.
Samantha and Amelia were obviously the best dressed babies there and received lots of attention. A mom of TWO sets of twins (all boys!) from Arkansas came up to me and we chatted for a while. She said she kept trying for a girl after her first set of twins and got more boys! I seriously can’t imagine!

More lounging.

All that relaxing was exhausting! Up to the room for a nap!
To be continued…
Lots of love,
